OUR STORY
WINNER OF IDEALOG'S MOST INNOVATIVE COMPANY FOR THE FOOD & BEVERAGE SECTOR (DEC 2018)
Pūhā & Pākehā started in the summer of 2014 when Belinda and Jarrad saw an opportunity to reconnect people with the kai of Aotearoa. Traditional Māori kai was largely overlooked by the public but with the injection of new cooking styles and modern flavours people would have a reason to give it a try.
The kaupapa (story of our brand) of Pūhā & Pākehā is taking Māori and native NZ kai and adding modern flavours. So for us 'Pūhā' means things like rēwena bread, horopito pepper, hāngi cooking etc. 'Pākehā' means any modern flavour or cooking method. For example our pulled pork has the 'Pūhā' elements of hāngi cooked pork and cabbage and 'Pākehā' elements of spice rub and mayo. The ampersand is a prominent part of our brand. It is Pūhā & Pākehā with the emphasis on the AND. The brand is about inclusiveness, bringing two cultures together, adding one thing to another to create something new. And that is Modern Māori Fusion street food to be enjoyed at markets and events all over Auckland.
Along with a shared passion for food, Belinda has a background in hospitality, events and marketing and having her own business in hospitality has been a lifelong dream.
Jarrad is Tainui me kahungunu and spent his childhood in Manurewa, South Auckland. He has a background in small business mentoring and training.
